Why Your Training Programme Keeps Breaking (And How to Build One That Doesn't)

Most fitness programmes fail City professionals not because of discipline, but because of design. They're built for a life that doesn't exist — one where you control your calendar, sessions are inviolable, and five consistent days per week is a reasonable baseline.

Why rigid programmes fail this environment

Most commercial training programmes assume a fixed weekly structure. These are sensible templates for someone with a predictable schedule. They were not designed for people whose Tuesdays can disappear without warning. Once a programme is perceived as "broken" — because a session was missed — most people don't adapt it. They abandon it. The restart cycle is the result: commit, run well for two to four weeks, hit a disruption, abandon, restart.

The minimum effective dose principle

Maintaining muscle mass requires significantly less volume than building it — as few as one to two quality sets per muscle group per week is sufficient to prevent meaningful regression during a reduced-volume period. A resilient programme has two tiers built in from the start: the full programme for weeks where your schedule permits, and a compressed programme for weeks where it doesn't. Both are legitimate. Neither represents failure.

What a resilient programme looks like in practice

The compressed version is not the full programme with sessions removed. It's a purpose-designed version: two full-body sessions per week, 45–50 minutes each, built around three to four compound movements. Over a 16-week period, a programme running at 80% adherence on a simple two-tier structure will produce substantially better results than one running at 40% adherence on an optimal but rigid structure.
